In April 26, 1964, the African islands of Zanzibar united with mainland Tanganyika to form The United Republic of Tanzania. This unification is known as Muungano or Unity Day.
This year’s Muungano Unity Day celebration will be a BBQ and Soccer Match.

"West Africa Meets Westwood"
What: Free concert showcases the collaboration of visiting master Nigerian musicians with UCLA musicians and dancers.
Featuring: Baba Ken Okulolo, Soji Odukogbe, Will Magid

The Cultural Affairs Commission at UCLA, the organization that hosts the annual JazzReggae Festival, will hold a free concert entitled "West Africa meets Westwood," on Sunday, April 6, 2008, at 7pm. The event will showcase West African and American musical traditions, including: Afrobeat, Highlife, Jazz, and Fusion. The show will feature:
Master Nigerian bandleader Baba Ken Okulolo, who leads the Afro-Beat ensemble Kotoja, and the West African Highlife Band; known for his work with King Sunny Ade and other legendary Nigerian bands;
Soji Odukogbe, long-time lead guitarist for the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti;
Will Magid, trumpeter, event organizer, and UCLA senior;
along with a group of talented UCLA musicians and dancers. Scheduled to perform:

Submitted by admin on Tue, 2009-06-16 15:29. EventsThe BBC's annual competition for Swahili-speaking entrepreneurs, aged 16-24, who have a business idea that will benefit their community. The winner receives $5,000 to realise their idea.
The countries involved are: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Entries should be submitted from June 1st to June 30th. Three successful entrants from each country will compete in national heats in July.
One finalist from each country will then go through to the grand final to be held in Mombasa, Kenya on August 13th 2009.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2009, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. In conjunction with this historic event, I will host two functions for constituents witnessing the inauguration of President-elect Obama. The first will be held in my Washington, D.C. office with any constituents in town to witness the inauguration. The second gathering will be held by my district staff in Pasadena where all constituents are welcomed to join in a live viewing of the inauguration telecast. Both events will allow me to provide information on the priorities of the incoming Administration and the 111th Congress.

The African Student Union at California State University Long Beach is pleased to invite you to the CSULB 29th Annual Black Consciousness Conference to be held December 4-6, 2008 in the CSULB Beach Auditorium. The Black Consciousness Conference has a strong tradition of being intellectually stimulating for its participants. It has been a positive experience for every individual involved. Its goal is to seek to enhance awareness in the community about topics that impact the community. With a legacy of reaching a wide variety of students and community members from all over the United States, the Black Consciousness Conference has proven to be an exceptional contribution to the community.
The Black Consciousness Conference has featured world renowned scholars and educators from all over the country, such as educational psychologist Dr. Julia Hare, scholar, educator, and author of over 65 books Dr. Molefi Asante, former chair of the Black Panther Party Elaine Brown, 1968 Olympian John Carlos, and many more! The theme of this year’s conference is “The Autonomy of a People: Seizing our Future.” The theme will address topics such as entrepreneurship, personal advancement and identity development, educational access rates and achievement, poverty, health, and global cultural awareness.
